Did you guys use a hip belt machine? I was doing belt squats when my back was injured but I found that you couldn't really fit more than 5 plates or so between the legs without hitting the hamstrings (or worse). What was your set up like?
@ Nathan: I think I went up to 350-400 for 8 reps or so.. I forget. This is definitely nothing like a regular squat but I do feel like it worked my hips well.
@ Dave: We didn't use a machine. We used a set up similar to the video of the English guy. The main difference was that our plates were stacked vertically on top of each other on this long metal shaft that he bought. He has loaded ~600-700 on that thing with kilo plates.

What weight did you use for the hip squat? I can't imagine that it is the same as a normal squat ... 500x20 is a ridonkulous regular squat, so ...
Ouch. That tear looked nasty.
