Club Sports Update:
Okay-- for those interested, here's the rundown. I spoke with the Director of Club Sports, and overall I think the conversation went well. I think he likes us and sees the Powerlifting club as a great addition to the club teams.
However, his main hesitancy in granting us a Conditional Club Status revolves around the unique variable of using the Wooden Center Facilities. Most other clubs utilize field spaces, whereas we would be occupying Wooden Center. It would be hard for him to grant us exclusive use of the facility 1-3hours a day (or our 5 training days). I told him that though exclusive use would be nice, it's not necessary; we wouldn't be a problem, and pointed out common gym courtesy (basically what we normally do). However, he kept asking about our coaches, who trains members, what about people who don't know anything, people wanting to work out with you, etc. I tried to address any concerns and told him that not only does our team excel on teamwork and employ a cyclical system of more seasoned lifters helping out newer lifters for form and technique, but that we also have an expert lifter/coach, Dave. And most of all, safety is a big priority. Besides, I pointed out that it might actually be more beneficial (for newer lifters, and UCLA (injury-wise) that having a powerlifting team would be able to point out correct form from the get go, instead of developing bad habits.
I told him much more b.s., but basically it sounds like to me that his main areas of concern are 1) Safety; and 2) Liability issues and using Wooden (i.e: using Wooden equipment, as a club you are now able to solicit anyone, etc.)
So that's where the talks are left at; he's gonna speak with Wooden Center managers/trainers regarding his facility/safety concerns etc before getting back to us

try getting a hold of Ray Weisenbarger. he is the guy that was at the last venice beach competition and said he might be able to work something out to allow us to train in acosta....
Dean, welcome back to the blog. I think it might be a good idea, if you can get up there on a weekday, to get things rolling with Ray ASAP so Trey can say "We train in Acosta bitch, we don't need Wooden," and thus dodge his concerns.
Also, Trey, you can use the arguement that most of the other club sports use Wooden in an unofficial capacity to train anyway, what's the difference between them lifting and you guys lifting?
Good job Trey, seems like you handled it pretty well.
dean, good stuff
jake-- ..beats me.
To me, there is no difference between the rugby guys coming in after practice hittin the gym and us lifting at the gym. Likewise, it's pretty much the same as any college undergrad utilizing the gym-- they use the weights and understand any risk of accidentally dropping it on their toe. (i.e kyle almost chopping off some dude's head when getting up from skull crushers)
I think he just has a problem that by us being a "UCLA" Club Sports Team, they're now hooked on the line to a certain extent. And by knowingly allowing us at Wooden, there's whatever liability/guideline issues he has to follow with that facility.
Again-- I have NO idea, as when I played club lacrosse (broken collar bones etc. are not abnormal) you just sign off a liability form and you're fine. So not quite sure.. but Acosta would def be nice for everyone
greg, do work today. i heard on wed, they'll be looking for that "pushup guy"
I think it's slightly ironic that I am the saftey officer after all of that.
Kyle Ransom=liability
Is my removal from the team going to be one of the conditions for becoming a club sport?
Who would you guys make fun of then?
easy. your mom
Trey you better show up on wednesday otherwise I'm not running.
