I saw the doctor today and they think it's likely something is wrong with one of my discs but that it's not too serious. I'm not supposed to put any strain on my lower back for a few weeks. I also have muscle relaxers to loosen the area up.

Reverse hypers.
I thought of that too. We have a horrible reverse hyper machine in Wooden that only goes to a 90° angle, thereby defeating any stretching benefits of the exercise. We've talked with them several times about replacing it, but apparent we need MOAR HAND BIKES.
For now, I've just been using the regular hyperextension to loosen up the lower back. It's feeling much better tonight after not irritating it with a workout, so hopefully I will be back at it soon.
