Injury Update

Kevin got an MRI. The result is an annular tear in one of his disks (L5 - S1). He's probably going to miss most of his high school preseason fall/winter baseball

Oh man! Sorry to hear that :( (Glad to hear the were able to detect it though.) How is Kevin holding up otherwise?

He's doing alright. He can still bench press, so that's a positive for him. As long as he can bench, he will be somewhat happy.

THat sucks, man. As much as it might suck, I'd really recommend that he get on some back rehab work: light good mornings, DLs and such. I had chronic, sometimes intense back pain in 2005-2006 (resulting from previous body-building style idiocy). The only thing that solved it was to deadlift. WHen I started DL-ing again in late 2006 I got 135 for 5 hard reps. So take it slow and smart, but I think it's pretty critical to strengthen the back muscles.

Any word from the doctor about what he can/can't do? Is he going into physical therapy? I agree that light work with very strict form could be very helpful in healing the back, but what does the doctor say? Whats the estimated recovery time?

Get well soon, Kevs.

The doctor says he can't run, squat, deadlift, shoulder press. He said he can bench light, curl light, and do some upper back things. We're not sure yet about rehab. I think it's supposed to take 6 weeks for the disk to recover.

Read up on what Louie Simmons did to rehab his back instead of having his vertebrae fused. Don't listen too carefully to me because I'm not a doctor BUT if I were injured I'd go to the gym and do whatever I could. Lots of reverse hypers, light lifts, high reps just for blood flow. Also, although much easier said than done, it is highly recommended in strength training circles to find a doctor who lifts or works with strength athletes because he'll understand your injury better and also your psychological need to keep lifting even though you're hurt.

All that said, be conservative.

Well, shit fucking hell, I'm glad to hear he can bench. That at least means the pain isn't ruining him!

Like Phil, I also had chronic back pain, but when I was much younger. I then did swimming for PT and transitioned to the light assist work and then deadlifts. Somewhere along the way I became ironback. I believe Kevin is the Prophesized heir to the throne.
