Luke 4-14-12 USAPL Collegiate Nationals 2012

USAPL Collegiate Nationals 2012, Baton Rouge

I did not have a very good start to this meet. I got sick with cholera (not really) and threw up the night before lifting, stayed up until 2 coughing, woke up at 6:40 and weighed in light at 158 pounds. I had a bad cough the whole trip and almost threw up again between 225 and 315 when warming up for squats. Considering this, I did pretty well.

Squat
207.5 kg (457 lbs) 2 whites. 1 red for depth. easy
217.5 kg (480 lbs) 2 whites. 1 red for depth. 16 pound meet PR. This one felt pretty hard and I only would have gone up 5 kilos, but I decided to go for 500 since I already had a big lead
227.5 kg (501 lbs) 3 reds. Failed just out of the hole. I blame the cholera.

Bench
95 kg (210 lbs) 3 whites. easy
105 kg (231 lbs) whites. pretty easy. 5 pound meet PR.
110 kg (243 lbs) 3 reds. almost had it, but failed in the transition to lockout

Deadlift
195 kg (430 lbs) 3 reds. went up super fast, but I fell forward and dropped it at the top.
202.5 kg (446 lbs) 3 whites. easy. I wanted to repeat my first because I was scared, but Mis made me move up because it was so easy
217.5 kg (480 lbs) 3 whites. easy. 28 pound meet PR. Had 10+ pounds in me.

Total: 540 kg (1190 lbs) 49 pound meet PR

Pretty good meet. I definitely had more in me, but the judging was very strict and I was not feeling near my best. I hit a triple body weight squat and deadlift. Thank you everyone that helped, especially my teammates for cranking my wraps, helping me warm up, and bringing me tums and other requests, Misael for submitting my attempts and helping in general, and Dave for handling my gear, coaching, and eating my tasty cakes.

USPA West Coast Open 2/18/2012

Hey guys,

So I did my 3rd meet with Diablo Barbell on Saturday. This was my 3rd meet in 5 months. (Ted believes me and the other new guy should compete as much as often as we can). I was aiming high for a 1600 total but only got 1503.

Weight Class: 198
BW: 197

Squat
1st attempt - 573 - 2 Reds No Lift (You could see how loose I was at the bottom, too much time between last warm-up and first attempt)

2nd attempt - 573 - 3 Whites (got xtra low)

3rd attempt - 600 - No lift; I was coming up nicely out of the hole but couldn't lock it out. This pissed me off bc I hit 595 in the gym without knee wraps. Oh well...

Here's 595 in the gym with no knee wraps:

Bench
1st attempt - 363 - 3 Whites
2nd attempt - 385 - 3 Reds; butt came off
3rd attempt - 385 - 3 Whites; butt stayed on :)

Deadlift (conventional)
1st attempt - 545 - 3 Whites
2nd attempt - 562 - 3 reds; Couldn't lock it
3rd attempt - Ted pulled me off the platform bc I almost passed out from my 2nd attempt. Didn't take my 3rd.

Total: 1503 (previous meet in Dec was 1432). Vids to come

Congrats to those going to Nationals and to those that hit new PRs! Hope you guys are doing well!

USAPL State Championships 2/11/12

Body weight: 66.1 (145.4) (dehydrated too much for this)
Weight class: 67.5 (148.8)

Squat:
67.5 (148.8)
75 (165.3) (2 red lights on depth, at parallel)
77.5 (170.5) (5 lbs less than my 1RM, but I consider it a success in light of being injured)

Had 4 Advil about 30 min before warming up and couldn't feel a thing, but definitely feel it today.

Bench press
35 (77.2)
37.5 (88.2) (3 lb PR)
42.5 (93.5) (ha, noooope)

Deadlift:
107.5 (237.0)
120 (264.6) (lost balance and leaned forward a bit so missed the top 3 inches)
120 (264.6) (same as my 1RM)

Total: 77.5 (170.5) + 37.5 (88.2) + 120 (264.6) = 237.5 (523.6)

Qualified for Collegiate Nationals (raw) again. Was hoping to make some big PRs, but at least established some state records! Hopefully the hip will feel better soon and I can squat bigger.

Body weight: 66.3 (146.1)
Weight class: 67.5 (148.8)

Squat:
67.5 (148.8)
75 (165.3) (knees came in a bit)

Bench press
35 (77.2)
37.5 (82.7) (felt solid)
40 (88.2) (fail, would have been a 3 lb PR but just didn't set up right)

Deadlift:
107.5 (237.0) (2 red lights, sunk a little at the top)
115 (253.5) (went up cleanly)
120 (264.6) (unfortunately don't have vid of the lift and can't check form, but thanks for the backslap Ryan)

Total: 80 (176.4) + 37.5 (82.7) + 120 (264.6) = 237.5 (523.6)
Qualifying total for Collegiate Nationals: 230 (507)

11.19.11--Meet Write-Up

Competing in the 82.5 kg (181.7 lbs) weight class
Body weight at weigh in: 90.3 kg (178.89 lbs)
Body weight after my last deadlift attempt: 185.3 lbs
Hooray weight maniuplation!!!

Squat:
1. 140 kg (308.6)- 3 whites. Nice and easy opener to get into the meet
2. 150 kg (330.7) -1 white, 2 bullshit reds. I don't have an angle from the side, but every time I watch the clip of this lift, I have no doubt I hit depth
3. 150 kg (330.7)- 3 whites. Easy weight. Would've liked to go for more, but went conservatively. 22.5 kg (50 lb) meet PR

Bench Press:
1. 85 kg (187.4)-3 whites. Easy opener
2. 90 kg (198.4)- 3 whites. Felt good, but back was cramping.
3. 92.5 kg (203.9)- 2 whites 1 red. Got hard where it normally does, but once I got it to where I can activate my triceps, it was smooth sailing. 7.5 kg (16.5 lb) meet PR, 3.9 lb PR

Deadlift:
1. 170 kg (374.8): 3 whites. Easy opener.
2. 182.5 kg (402.3): 3 whites. Easiest that has ever felt. 7.5 kg (16.5 lb) meet PR
3. 200 kg (440): 3 reds. Ripped it off the ground, but it was too far from my body and when I pulled it closer, it knocked into me, causing me to lose my balance and fall back. Oh well, I decided to go big and I don't regret it.

Total: 425 kg (937 lbs); 37.5 kg (83 lb) meet PR

10/9/2011 - USPA San Jose Open Powerlifting Championship

What's up guys !

So I did my first USPA meet with Diablo as a 198 and it looks like I've made some progress, except for dlift :(

Weight Class: 198
BW: 192 (after a ton of gatorade and breakfast)

Squat
1. 485 - 3 whites
2. 512 - 3 whites
3. 551 - 3 whites (surprisingly easy) 50lb Meet PR, Ted said I left about 25lbs in the tank.

Bench
1. 303 - 3 whites
2. 325 - 3 whites 50lb Meet PR
3. 340 - 3 reds, couldn't lock out with my left arm, also my leg position was a little off.

Deadlift
1. 485 - 3 whites
2. 518 - 3 reds, crappy set up cost me a glute cramp
3. 518 - 3 whites, this would have cost me some prowler trips if I had missed it.

Total: 1,394 88lb Meet PR

I'm doing USPA for now bc they have meets in NorCal so it's really convenient. But don't worry, the thought of drug use has never crossed my mind. Also, I'll be coming down to LA on the 28th and I'd like to join y'allz for GPP.

Keep lifting strong!

USAPL 2011 Raw Nationals Meet Report

Finally getting around to writing the report...

Weigh-in: 194. I think I might have cut a bit too much on accident. I took a hot bath the night before, which felt great but I think I was more dehydrated than I would have liked. Pounding water felt meh, but by the time warm ups rolled around, I was back in the game.

Squats:
512 x 1
540 x 1 @ 10
551 x 1 @ 10

Warming up was fairly interesting. Guys in the back room were warming up with 525. The warm ups felt good though. Opener was light. 540 was harder than I expected. I twisted a bit, which made it slow. I originally thought 556, but I went with 551 to stay safe. 551 felt easier than 540, so I might have had 556 in me after all. Oh well, better to have that extra 10.

Bench:
304 x 1 @ 9
319 x f
319 x 1 @ 10+

Warm ups went well with minimal should discomfort (though it was still there). Opener felt light. The first attempt at 319 just stalled hard. EFFF. I was expecting to hit that with some effort, but not fail. I think this is where the weight cut hit me hardest (as always). It was do or die on the third, so I just kept grinding no matter what. I am honestly amazed it kept moving. I was pushing and it just felt like it was moving but i didn't know why...

Deadlift:
650 x 1
688 x 1
716 x f (.9)

With 650, I went from like 15th to 2nd, haha. The right judge red-lighted me for apparently dipping at the top. I didn't see it in the video (the bar only moves slightly sideways as I rock into place). I was not in the mood.

I was thinking 699 on the second, but the competition was insanely fierce so I went conservative with 688. The lift was hard, but definitely not a max effort. It also sent a message to those after me to choose their third attempt knowing I could pull more.

For the third, I told Matt and Greg to put in whatever I needed to win. Had Anthony Parella hit his third, I would have needed 727. However, he didn't so we went with 716 (there was some confusion though, because Matt thought Tony had hit his third, so we had to redact the change to the third attempt.) In the end, I couldn't pull it all the way but managed to get it almost to lock out. I was still pretty happy with this. It was a long day, with the meet running 7 hours at that point and after a heavy squat, 688 wasn't too bad.

Overall, very happy with the meet. I would have liked the win, but it was a good battle with Tony and he is an awesome dude to compete with. Clearly, I'm not going to win a national championship with a 319 bench, so getting my shoulder healthy is key. Also not neglecting my upper back work so I can finish those pulls.

2011 CA State games of America

242 Teen Class (19 years old)
Weighed in at 235 lbs.... I was consistently weighing in at 245+ but I got Strep throat a week ago, that combined with dehydration I weighed in light.

Squat-
Very Rushed Warmup, and I was really nervous. After rules briefing I had about 15 minutes to be ready on the platform for my opener, this turned a usual 45 minute process into 15...
545lbs 3 White Lights, felt strong
584lbs 3 White Lights, no grind still felt good
601 Failed a few inches above Parallel, I was just tired at this point, I lost tightness and my knees came in.

Bench-
Warmups felt strong
352lbs 3 Whites Unnecessarily hard, there was still unpulled slack in my shirt.
374lbs 3 Whites easier than opener
385lbs 3 Whites Easiest Attempt, totally left some in the tank

Deadlift-
Warmups felt average
545 3 whites, meh
584 Fail, I went out there cold and not syched, I was exhausted by this point in the meet, squat and bench killed me
584lbs 2 Whites, thanks to Vit's brothers slap.

Though I felt i could have done better, 7/9 in my first geared meet isn't bad It was a great experience and I had a ton of fun but I feel like I got run over by a truck.... Seeing as my squat suit straps are super loose I'm getting them taken in about 2 inches. This makes me very anxious to start training in gear.. I'll be in Europe for the next 2 weeks but when I come back all eyes are on 670/450/630 At Collegiates. Thank you everyone that made this happen =]

2011 CA State Games of America

198 Junior/Open
Weigh in: 194.7 lbs

Squat
418.75 lbs -3 whites
440.75 -3 whites
457.25 -3 whites (39 lb meet PR)
I hit the hole a lot faster on the last attempt and it felt much better than 440. Probably left a few lbs on the platform, but regardless I was very satisfied with this. Thank you Dave for some excellent knee wraps.

Bench
281 lbs -3 whites
303 -2 whites 1 red (head came up) (50 lb meet PR)
330 -no lift, 2 reds 1 white (double dipped the bar and my head came up)
To be honest, all three of these lifts were pretty filthy as everyone who was there will attest to. Head came off the bench on all three of them and I touched pretty low too. I was very happy to actually be able to grind out 330 despite not getting the lift passed.

Deadlift
429 lbs -3 whites
462.75 -3 whites (22 lb meet PR)
501 -no lift, failed 2 inches above the knees
First two attempts were pretty easy and the plan was to try 485, which I probably could have gotten, but Dave and Misael insisted that I try 501 and I'm glad I did because there really was no reason not to. It was awesome having the whole team there to get psyched for me as well. I really would have liked to hit 501 but now there's no doubt in my mind that I'll exceed it at the next meet.

Total: 1223 lbs (115 lb meet PR)

This was definitely my best meet performance ever. First meet at 198, but I felt much better and more confident than I did at 181. I definitely have some form issues to address on all three lifts, mostly bench. But for now I really just look forward to continuing training. Thank you to all of the people who came to support the competitors. I had a great time spending the weekend with you.

Annoyingly long pre-meet, post cycle thoughts..

I always like to post on the log my proposed attempts, And I'm extremely bored and have watched all the Powerlifting watch videos from this week, so If need be I can pull my log up @ the meet. I know things happen, and these are tentative, but this is what I'm shooting for. The bench is the only Iffy thing, 375 in training didn't feel too hard, I could probably double it, IF I stay in the groove. I've learned in a shirt anything can feel hard, or extremely easy in a shirt it just depends if your form is pefect.

I'm competing August 6th at the State Games, Morning BW is around 245 So i'll be cutting a little water weight.

Squat-

1st Attempt- 247.5 Kilos ( 545 lbs)
2nd Attempt- 265.0 Kilos (584 lbs)
3rd Attempt- 272.5 Kilos (601 lbs)
Squat Notes-
My Squat has felt very strong this cycle, I'm extremely happy with it. I started this geared cycle 5 weeks back and tripled 530, and each rep felt hard and heavy. Each week 540, Whether I was singling, doubling and tripling it has felt increasingly easier, I believe this week i could have hit 545x5. 585 with self wraps wasn't ME by any means, 601 was my main goal for this meet, the strength is there "its already done, I just have to do it".

Bench-

1st attempt- 160.0 Kilos (352lbs)
2nd Attempt- 170.0Kilos (375lbs)
3rd Attempt-182.5 Kilos (402lbs)
Bench Notes-
The bench is the only Iffy thing, 375 in training didn't feel too hard, I could probably double it, IF I stay in the groove. I've learned in a shirt anything can feel hard, or extremely easy in a shirt it just depends if your form is pefect. I definetly don't suck quite so much at bench anymore, weekly benching at OC Strength club has helped so much, such knowledgable people.

Deadlift-

1st Attempt- 247.5 Kilos ( 545 lbs)
2nd Attempt- 265.0 Kilos (584 lbs)
3rd Attempt- 272.5 Kilos (601 lbs)
Deadlift Notes-
I hit 600 in June, this was after a deload week and I was completely fresh.
So 601 after a geared Squat and Bench is acceptable. Deadlift training this cycle was far different than usual. Usually I deadlifted on thursday, after a day of rest with nose tork and slaps. This cycle I deadlifted tuesday, after geared bench(which makes your back extremely sore), and without meet style motivation. This seems good though, and pulling the day after a bench day seems more true to how you would feel in a meet.
550 went up pretty easy, and considering these circumstances, 601 seems very doable.

More food for thought-
Squatting in the suit and band squats seem to have made my lockout on deadlift even stronger than before, but has maybe hindered the off floor speed. This makes complete since because The wraps and suit are doing more work at the bottom, and the way I deadlift(very low hips) is more similar to a squat or FS. SO I feel front squatting and more heavy quad work needs to be added in the future.

Bodyweight wise, I've gained a solid 4-5 Lbs through this 6 week cycle, It hasn't really been intentional I'm just a lot more hungry, and a lot more tired from the combination of lifting much heavier weights and working for my dad often doing a lot of manual labor which often includes trenching and sledgehammers, sometimes getting up at 2am on emergency calls. It isn't bad weight though at all, I'm very happy with this, I think this will be my last 242 meet though. its time...

Most importantly, I feel my hip is now completely healed and I have no pain doing anything including Raw squatting. I can't remember a Time where between my hip, sciatic nerve, OR SI joint didn't hurt since Last august. The squat suit combined with a very talented ART Combined With VIT's<3 convincing me to lift geared has allowed me to to achieve this. I miss training with the team, my sometimes solo, 2am Geared squats is far from optimal.

Let the (state) Games Begin

2.19.11 Meet

Weight: 77.9 kg (171.74 lbs)
Class: 181 lb Men's Raw Junior

Squat
1st attempt 130 kg (286.5 lbs): good
2nd attempt 142.5 kg (314 lbs): good
3rd attempt 150 kg (330.5 lbs): good (15.5 lb PR)
I really wish someone had taken a picture of the faces I was making just because I want to see them. All attempts felt pretty good though, but this is around where I was peaking on my caffeine/endorphin high

Bench
1st attempt 85 kg (187.2 lbs): good
2nd attempt 92.5 kg (203.7 lbs): no good; uneven extension
3rd attempt 92.5 kg (203.7 lbs): good
Never noticed how strict judges were on extension until I watched the video again. The weight itself felt easy and I honestly probably should've gone for my original 209.2 kg but didn't want the same thing to happen and only be credited for 187.2.

Deadlift
1st attempt 182.5 kg (402.2 lbs): good
2nd attempt 192.5 kg (424.2 lbs): good
3rd attempt 195 kg (429.7 lbs): no good
Pretty gassed at this point (not to mention caffeine crashing) so 424.2 felt like my old PR attempt of 435. Watching the video my 429.7 might've been possible if I had started lower and didn't lock my knees out so fast.

Total
435 kg (959 lbs)
Felt good about my lifts this meet, with a PR on squat and proof of over 200 in bench and 400 in deadlift for getting over mental blocks in training. My ideal meet would've resulted in 1000 total but I'm really starting to think I can next time. And after trying this meet without attempting to cut and with personal problems (sleep) beforehand, I think I'm ready to try to go back down to 165 for August's meet. As a final note, I fucking love caffeine.

Meet Write-up

Bodyweight 89kg ~ 196

Squat:
484 x 3 whites
502 x 3 whites
519 x 3 whites (+9 pound PR)

This went much better than when I hit my openers two weeks prior. 484 felt very easy. I think I had around 10 pounds left in the squat, but stayed conservative to break the total record.

Bench:
314 x 3 whites
330 x fail
330 x fail

I was not happy about this. During warm ups it felt like my pecs were about to tear off, which was disconcerting. I think the slight weight loss really killed my bench. I hit 330 solidly just a week prior, so I'm disappointed not to have those extra 16 pounds.

Deadlift:
633 x 3 whites (+4 meet PR)
672 x 3 whites (+22 PR)
705 x fail

I got the total record with 672 and was all amped up, so I just went for 705 at that point. Looking at the video, it got much higher than it felt like, but I couldn't lock it out. I think I was mildly gassed at this point anyway, but I need to work on my lockout more if I'm going to get that 705 raw deadlift. I'd say I was probably good for 684 that day had I not been overly ambitious, haha.

Total:
1504 (+127 meet PR (last time was @ 181)), which apparently gives me an elite raw total? (according to some definition of elite)

Overall, it was good meet. Having an entire meet before hand was a bit exhausting though. It felt like lifting in two meets the same day and by the end it was harder to keep my energy levels up. That said, the meet was well run and judging was fair. I didn't see very many questionable calls.

Big thanks to everyone who came and the team for cheering me on. And especially Ross for loading a lot of weight, haha.

Meet Writeup 2.19.11

Competed in the Raw Jr. 75kg (165lb) weight class

Weigh In:
74 kg (163.14 lbs)

Squat:
1. 115 kg (253.5)--3 whites
2. 127.5 kg (281)--3 whites
3. 135 kg (297.6)--3 reds. I went big, went too deep and didn't have enough out of the hole. This is the one I wish I had a do-over on. Wish I would've used nose tork or gone a little lighter, but damn I feel like I can hit that.

Bench Press:
1. 75 kg (165.2)--3 whites, but back hurt throughout lift, so I went belted for next two attempts.
2. 82.5 kg (181.7)--3 whites
3. 85 kg (187.2)--3 whites. 2.2lb PR. I really didn't think I would get this, but I used nose tork and had the belt, which I believe made the difference. I'm gonna belt anything I do heavy from now on. Thanks for the lift off Vit!

Deadlift:
1. 150 kg (330.5)--3 whites
2. 165 kg (363.7)--3 whites
3. 175 kg (385.8)--3 whites. 20 lb PR. I probably could've done more, I was so pumped for this (Thank you nose tork and Vit slap). My deadlift is horribly inconsistent, but not having grip issues was key to success here. I'm definitely glad I made the switch to conventional last year, it seems to be paying off.

Total:
387.5 kg (854.3). 57.5 kg (126.8) meet PR. I'm really happy with that progress in just 1 year. Now I'm really gunning for 200 bench, 300 squat, and 400 deadlift by the end of the year. Also excited to be in a race with a bunch of the guys on the team to 900. Should be a fun Spring Quarter!

Vids to come. Be patient please!

Luke 2-19-11 USAPL CA State Championships

Weighed In at 66.9 kg (147.5 lbs)
Competed in the Raw Open 148 (67.5 kg) weight class, although I had signed up for junior

Squat
152.5 kg (336 lbs) 2 whites 1 red- easy but I got 1 red for depth
162.5 kg (358 lbs) 3 whites- made sure I sank this one, felt a groin stretch at the bottom, not too hard
170 kg (375 lbs) 2 whites 1 red- PR by 5 pounds, I nose torked this lift and it really helped. I could have gone a little heavier, but I did get 1 red for depth, so it was a good choice. Finally got that 2.5 x body weight squat.

Bench
90 kg (198.4 lbs) 3 whites- not as easy as planned, pause was longer than expected
95 kg (209.4 lbs) 3 reds- failed 2 inches off chest at former weak point. I just felt really weak in bench at the meet and I also wasn't focused at this point
95 kg (209.4 lbs) 3 reds- retry of second, same result. I nose torked this lift, but no improvement. This really pissed me off since I hit this weight a year ago at the meet and I've recently benched 220 and 210 x 2. Missing my second attempt and not getting a chance at 220 ruined my chances for a 1025 pound total which would qualify me for nationals, however I still had a shot at a 1000+ total. I blame my bench weakness partially on cutting weight, because bench strength is always the first to go. I'm gonna try to gain some weight and do some volume for bench.

Deadlift
177.5 kg (391 lbs) 3 whites- 2.5 kg lower than I initially planned for safety margin
190 kg (419 lbs) 3 whites- PR by 5 pounds. I nose torked this lift a little bit, and it was pretty hard. I was shaky on the way up.
195 kg (430 lbs) 3 whites- PR by 16 pounds. Nose torked. 2.9 x body weight. This one was really hard, I though I was gonna fail this one and it felt pretty slow. Vit's slap probably helped me get this, along with my roar. Really happy with this PR which brought my total to over 1000.

Total: 455 kg (1003 lbs) 70 kg (154 lbs) meet PR
I was very happy about my squat and bench PR's, but pretty pissed at my bench. This meet is strong evidence that powerlifting has done nothing for my bench since I officially am weaker than a year ago. I think I need to try my own thing for bench. I got drug tested after the meet. I was 22 pounds away from qualifying for nationals even though I competed raw. Good meet overall, great turnout from UCLA. Thank you everyone who was there and also to everyone who has helped me train for this.

Total: 534.33kg (1,178lbs)
My last Raw total in July was 1,080 lbs

This was the best meet UCLA Powerlifting has ever seen. I don't think we've gotten close to having this many people show up. I can officially say I'm a Class I lifter (needed a 1,148lb total). The next step is becoming a Master and fixing the shit out of my bench. The highlight of the evening for me was my 3rd attempt deadlift. It was awesome having you guys there to pump me up in the back. I couldn't have done it without you. I'm looking forward to training in the suit again and giving sumo deadlifting a second chance. Thanks again to the spotters, the people that helped load the weight in the back and to everyone that came out. Good job to all of you !!! We fuckin' killed that shit !!!

Well, I didn't reach the 1145 qualifying total that I was gunning for but I still think it was a good meet overall. Weight loss definitely made my gear fit less tight since even after eating/drinking during the day I was still about 10-12 lbs below the bodyweight that I trained at for the meet. I am glad I was able to grind out that last squat and basically all 3 bench presses despite the gear not fitting right. As for deadlifts, I was able to get 473 lb to my knees and had the same sticking point that I desperately need to work on. I look forward to focusing on raw strength for a while now since these past 6 months have been centered around geared lifting for me. Finally I'd like to thank everyone who came to support us/help out and send a congratulations out to all the guys who competed. Couldn't have not bombed out without you guys lol.
